Maria could quite possibly lay the claim to “longest legs in Budapest”. She’s a tall drink of water, lads, and one of the sweetest people you’ll ever meet. We asked her a few questions so you could get to know one of our veteran Budapest guides a little better.
Where were you born? I was born in Budapest, Hungary.
How long you’ve been working as Stag Republic guide in Budapest? For over two years now
Which languages do you speak? Hungarian, English and German
What music do you like? I am mostly into rock or alternative rock music. In clubs, I wanna hear pop and dance, that’s the best music for me on weekends.
What is your favourite movie? I just loved Inception and the Sherlock Holmes movies. I can watch the Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless mind over and over again. The Dreamers from Bertolucci and Scandinavian comedies are also favourites of mine.
What do you like to do in your free time? I am an enthusiastic caffeine consumer. Usually, you can find me in one of my favourite cafés with my friends. When I leave the city I like to do sailing or backpacking.
Favourite restaurant/café/club in Budapest? And why? There are so many…but I love the bars close to the Basilica – Bar Negro or DiVino wine bar. I find SkyBar, Budapest’s new rooftop bar outstanding and I enjoy going to 4Play Lounge as well. As for clubs, Holdudvar on Margaret Island is my favourite place. For a filling dinner, Pampas Steakhouse is the best choice.
Favourite Budapest stag activity/event and why? Mud wrestling is always the funniest thing! I like it because it makes everyone laugh. It’s a perfect start before a pub crawl. During the day I prefer a private boat cruise on the Danube. On the boat’s sunny terrace we can enjoy the sights of Budapest with a beer in our hands. Very relaxing! The Trabant Tour is also very entertaining. I just love those odd little cars! And the group gets to see a bit of the country outside of Budapest while having fun!
What’s the one thing you tell all your stag groups (advice)? To make sure to try the poppy seed version of the national Hungarian shot, Pálinka. It’s delicious!
What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened to you or one of the lads in your stag group on a Budapest Stag Weekend? It is hard to pick a story, there is a new one every weekend:-))
A few weeks ago after a pub crawl, I had an early pick-up for an activity around 11 am. Surprisingly, none of the lads were there on time and didn’t even pick up the phone. So I went upstairs to check their rooms. When I turned the corner I saw one of the guys in deep sleep just in front of his room, against the door! He was so close to making it to his bed! :-))))
